Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new, divide by the old value, multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100−80)÷80 = 25%. Dividing by the new value instead is the most common mistake and gives 20%.

Why is a 50% rise then a 50% fall not back where I started?

Because each percentage applies to a different base. 100 rises to 150, then 50% of 150 is 75 — so you end at 75, not 100. This is why percentage changes cannot simply be added, and why investment losses hurt more than equivalent gains help.

How do I work backwards from a total?

If a price is 118 including 18% tax, divide by 1.18 to get the pre-tax figure — do not subtract 18%, which gives a different and wrong answer. Reverse-percentage mode does this for you.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

A rate going from 5% to 7% has risen by 2 percentage points but by 40 percent. They are routinely confused in news reporting, and the difference is often the whole story.

Can I calculate percentage difference between two values?

Yes. Note that percentage difference and percentage change are different calculations — change is relative to the original value, difference is relative to the average of both.

Tips for better results

  • Keep units consistent throughout — mixing months and years is the most common source of a wrong answer.
  • Try the calculation at a slightly worse input to see how sensitive the result is before relying on it.
  • The working is shown for a reason: if a figure looks surprising, read the steps before assuming it is wrong.

Common problems and how to fix them

The result differs from another calculator

Check the compounding basis and rounding rule. Both tools can be right under different conventions.

The output is blank

A required field is empty or holds a non-numeric character — a currency symbol or thousands separator pasted along with the number.

The number seems far too large

Almost always a units mismatch, such as an annual rate entered where a monthly one was expected.
