Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a price after a discount?
Multiply by (100 − discount) ÷ 100. A 30% discount on 2,000 is 2,000 × 0.7 = 1,400. Calculating the discount and subtracting gives the same answer with an extra step to get wrong.
Do stacked discounts add up?
No, and this is where shops make money on the confusion. 20% off then a further 10% off is not 30% — it is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so 28%. Each discount applies to the already-reduced price.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide, do not add back. If 1,400 is after 30% off, the original is 1,400 ÷ 0.7 = 2,000. Adding 30% to 1,400 gives 1,820, which is wrong.
Is tax applied before or after the discount?
Normally the discount comes first and tax is charged on the reduced price. It varies by jurisdiction and by how the seller structures the offer, so check the receipt if the final figure surprises you.
Can I work out the discount percentage from two prices?
Yes. Enter the original and sale price and the percentage is calculated for you — useful for checking whether an advertised "50% off" actually is.

Tips for better results
- Keep units consistent throughout — mixing months and years is the most common source of a wrong answer.
- Try the calculation at a slightly worse input to see how sensitive the result is before relying on it.
- The working is shown for a reason: if a figure looks surprising, read the steps before assuming it is wrong.
Common problems and how to fix them
The result differs from another calculator
Check the compounding basis and rounding rule. Both tools can be right under different conventions.
The output is blank
A required field is empty or holds a non-numeric character — a currency symbol or thousands separator pasted along with the number.
The number seems far too large
Almost always a units mismatch, such as an annual rate entered where a monthly one was expected.
