Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change speed without making the voice sound squeaky?
Yes — pitch and tempo are controlled separately. Speeding up a lecture without shifting pitch is the most common use, and it works well up to roughly 1.5×; beyond that intelligibility drops regardless of pitch.
Can this anonymise a voice?
It disguises a voice for casual listening, but a simple pitch shift is straightforward to reverse. Do not rely on it where genuine anonymity matters.
Why does the audio sound metallic after a big shift?
Large pitch shifts stretch the frequency content beyond what the algorithm can reconstruct naturally, producing the artefacts people describe as robotic. Smaller shifts sound far more convincing.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. Processing runs in your browser using the Web Audio API and nothing is stored.
Which formats can I process?
MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, FLAC and M4A among others. Export to a lossless format if you plan to edit further, since each lossy round trip costs quality.

Tips for better results
- Speech is fine in mono — downmixing halves the file size with no perceptible loss on voice content.
- For spoken word, 64–96 kbps is transparent; music generally needs 128 kbps or more.
- Every lossy re-encode loses information. Always start from the highest-quality original you have, not from a file you already compressed.
Common problems and how to fix them
The file will not load
The container is fine but the codec is unusual, or the file is partially downloaded. Re-download the original and try again.
The output sounds thin or watery
The bitrate is too low for the material. Raise it a step, and keep stereo if the source is music rather than speech.
Volume is inconsistent across the file
Enable loudness normalisation, which levels the track to a single EBU R128 target instead of leaving the peaks and quiet passages as they were.
