Which barcode type do I need?
CODE128 for internal use — it accepts any text and any length. EAN-13 for retail products sold in Europe and most of the world, UPC-A for North America. Retail codes are not free-form: they must be officially assigned to you.
Can I invent my own EAN or UPC number?
For a barcode you scan yourself, yes. For anything sold in shops, no — retail codes are issued by GS1, and an invented number will either fail validation or collide with a real product. Use CODE128 for internal labelling instead.
Why will my printed barcode not scan?
Almost always resolution or quiet zone. Print at actual size rather than scaling, and leave clear white space either side of the bars — scanners need it to find the code. Also avoid printing onto a coloured or reflective background.
Is the barcode good enough for print?
Yes. Output is high resolution and suitable for labels and packaging, not just screen display. There is no watermark and no limit on how many you generate.
Can I download the barcode as a vector?
SVG output is available, which scales to any size without softening. Use it for print; PNG is fine for screen and for systems that cannot accept SVG.
