Background Changer
Replace image backgrounds with colors or photos
What is Background Changer?
Background Changer is a free online image tool from Farvixo that lets you replace image backgrounds with colors or photos. The image is decoded, processed and saved inside your browser, so it never leaves your device. Output carries no watermark, keeps full resolution, and you can process as many images as you like without an account.
How to use Background Changer
Drop your image into Background Changer or click to browse. JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF are all accepted, and nothing leaves your device.
Choose dimensions, format and quality. Background Changer previews the output next to the original so you can judge the trade-off before saving.
Save the processed image at full resolution. No watermark is added and there is no daily cap — use Background Changer as much as you like.
Frequently Asked Questions
What background do official documents need?
Most government and passport photos require plain white or light grey with no shadow. For a specific portal, use our Passport Photo Maker or the matching government preset instead — those apply that authority's full rules, not just the background.
Why does the edge around hair look rough?
Hair is the hardest case for any background tool, because individual strands are partly transparent. A photo taken against a background that already contrasts with the subject gives the cleanest cut — that is more effective than any amount of adjustment afterwards.
Can I use a photo as the new background?
Yes. Bear in mind that a convincing result needs the lighting direction to roughly match between subject and background, or the composite reads as fake immediately.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, which matters here because the photos people put through this are usually of themselves.
What resolution should my source photo be?
As high as you have. Background separation works on edge detail, and a small compressed image simply has less of it — the result is a rougher cut no setting can recover.

- Background Changer — Image Tools
- Purpose
- Replace image backgrounds with colors or photos
- Input
- A single file (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP)
- Output
- Image file in the format you select, at full resolution
- Processing
- In your browser — files are never uploaded to a server
- Price
- Free, unlimited, no account required
- Limitations
- Bounded by your device's memory and CPU rather than a server quota; very large files may be slow on older hardware
Tips for better results
- Re-encoding drops the original EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates — useful for privacy, but keep an original if you need that data.
- Never upscale a raster image to hit a size requirement; it invents detail and produces a larger file that looks worse.
- When a form specifies both pixel dimensions and a KB limit, set the dimensions first, then lower quality until the size fits.
Common problems and how to fix them
Transparency turned black after converting to JPG
JPEG cannot store an alpha channel. Pick a background colour before converting, or export to PNG or WebP instead.
The output is larger than the original
You converted an already-compressed file to a lossless format such as PNG. Choose WebP or AVIF, or keep the original format and lower the quality.
The result looks soft or blocky
Quality is set too low for the amount of detail. Raise it in steps of five and compare — most photos hold up until roughly 70.
