## What is Video to GIF?

Video to GIF is a free browser-based video tool from Farvixo that lets you turn video clips into animated GIFs. It uses an in-browser FFmpeg build compiled to WebAssembly, so even large clips are processed on your own machine and never uploaded. No account, no watermark and no per-file size limit imposed by a server.

## Specifications

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Tool | Video to GIF — Video Tools |
| Purpose | Turn video clips into animated GIFs |
| Input | A single file (MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV) |
| Output | Video file in the selected container and codec |
| Processing | In your browser — files are never uploaded to a server |
| Price | Free, unlimited, no account required |
| Limitations | Bounded by your device's memory and CPU rather than a server quota; very large files may be slow on older hardware |

## How to use Video to GIF

1. **Load your video** — Select a video file in Video to GIF. Conversion happens in your browser using WebAssembly, so even large files never get uploaded anywhere.
2. **Pick format and quality** — Choose the output format, resolution and bitrate — or start from a ready-made preset if you are not sure what to pick.
3. **Convert and save** — Start the conversion and watch the progress bar; longer clips take a little time because the work runs on your own machine. Download when it finishes.

## Use cases

- Getting a clip under the size limit for WhatsApp, Gmail, Discord or a course upload
- Converting a recording to a format a specific player, editor or platform accepts
- Editors who want a quick change without opening a full desktop suite
- Handling confidential footage that must not be uploaded to an online converter

## Tips

- Processing speed depends on your own CPU, since the work is local. A laptop on battery-saver will be noticeably slower.
- H.264 (MP4) is the safest choice for compatibility; VP9 or AV1 give smaller files but decode slowly on older devices.
- Leave the tab open and visible — a backgrounded tab gets throttled by the browser and the encode will crawl.

## Common problems

- **The encode is very slow** — Everything runs on your device rather than a server farm. Pick a lower resolution or a faster preset, keep the tab in the foreground, and close other heavy tabs.
- **The output has no sound** — The chosen container cannot carry the source audio codec — WebM cannot hold AAC, for example. Re-encode the audio instead of copying the stream.
- **The browser ran out of memory** — The clip is too large to hold in memory. Trim it into shorter segments and process them one at a time.

## FAQ

### Why is my GIF so large?

GIF is an extremely inefficient format — it stores each frame with a 256-colour palette and no modern compression. A few seconds of video easily becomes several megabytes. Reduce the frame rate, the dimensions and the length; those three do almost all the work.

### What settings keep a GIF small?

10–15 frames per second, no more than 480 pixels wide, and under about five seconds. Beyond that the file grows faster than the added detail is worth.

### Why do the colours look wrong?

GIF allows only 256 colours per frame, so gradients and skin tones band visibly. Clips with flat colours convert cleanly; sunsets and video of faces do not. There is no way around it — it is the format.

### Should I use a GIF at all?

Often not. A short MP4 or WebM is dramatically smaller at better quality and autoplays silently on every modern platform. GIF is only genuinely necessary where a video file is not accepted.

### Is my video uploaded to convert it?

No. FFmpeg runs inside your browser tab, so there is no upload wait and no size limit — which matters, since GIF conversion is usually done on clips you have just recorded.
