## What is MD5 Generator?

MD5 Generator is a free security utility from Farvixo that lets you generate MD5 hashes from text or files. The value is processed locally in your browser and nothing is transmitted, stored or logged — which is the only acceptable design for a tool handling sensitive input. Free and unlimited.

## Specifications

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Tool | MD5 Generator — Security Tools |
| Purpose | Generate MD5 hashes from text or files |
| Input | Text or values you enter directly |
| Output | A hash, checksum or analysis result you can copy |
| Processing | In your browser — files are never uploaded to a server |
| Price | Free, unlimited, no account required |
| Limitations | Bounded by your device's memory and CPU rather than a server quota |

## How to use MD5 Generator

1. **Enter what you want to check** — Enter the value you want to check or generate in MD5 Generator.
2. **Run the check** — MD5 Generator performs the analysis and explains the result in plain language rather than only showing a raw score.
3. **Review and use the result** — Copy or download what you need. Nothing is logged or retained afterwards.

## Use cases

- Verifying a download matches the checksum the publisher listed
- Generating a hash while developing or testing an integration
- Checking the strength of a password or the validity of a certificate
- Security work that must not involve sending the value to a third party

## Tips

- Compare checksums character by character, or paste both into a comparison tool. Eyeballing the first and last few is how tampering gets missed.
- MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for detecting accidental corruption but are broken for security. Use SHA-256 where integrity matters.
- Nothing you enter here is transmitted, so it is safe to check real values rather than dummy ones.

## Common problems

- **The hash does not match the published one** — Confirm the algorithm matches (SHA-256 against SHA-256), then re-download — a truncated download changes the hash.
- **Hashing a large file is slow** — The whole file is read on your device. Large archives take time; leave the tab focused until it finishes.
- **The same input gives a different result elsewhere** — Usually a trailing newline or different text encoding. Hash the exact bytes, not a copy-pasted representation.

## FAQ

### Is MD5 still safe to use?

Only for detecting accidental corruption — a truncated download, a damaged file transfer. MD5 is cryptographically broken: deliberate collisions are cheap to produce, so it cannot prove a file has not been tampered with. Use SHA-256 for that.

### Why do publishers still list MD5 checksums?

Habit, and because it genuinely does catch corrupted downloads, which is the common failure. Where a publisher offers both, use the SHA-256 — it costs nothing extra and actually proves authenticity.

### Can an MD5 hash be reversed?

Not by computation, but short and common inputs are trivially found in precomputed lookup tables. An MD5 of a password is effectively public knowledge, which is why storing passwords this way is a serious flaw.

### Is my file uploaded to hash it?

No. The file is read and hashed in your browser, so even large archives can be checked without transferring them anywhere.

### Can I compare two hashes here?

Generate both and compare them directly. Even a single changed byte produces a completely different hash, so a partial match means nothing — they either match exactly or the files differ.
