## What is Image Converter?

Image Converter is a free online image tool from Farvixo that lets you convert JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF — every format measured at equal visual quality so you can see which is genuinely smaller. The image is decoded, processed and saved inside your browser, so it never leaves your device. Output carries no watermark, keeps full resolution, and you can process a whole batch at once without an account.

## Specifications

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Tool | Image Converter — Image Tools |
| Purpose | Convert JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF — every format measured at equal visual quality so you can see which is genuinely smaller |
| Input | One or more files (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP) |
| Output | Image file in the format you select, at full resolution |
| Processing | In your browser — files are never uploaded to a server |
| Price | Free, unlimited, no account required |
| Limitations | Bounded by your device's memory and CPU rather than a server quota; very large files may be slow on older hardware |

## How to use Image Converter

1. **Drop in an image** — Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or ICO — or paste one with Ctrl+V. It is decoded in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
2. **Let every format be measured** — Each format is encoded several times and decoded back, and the result is scored with SSIM until they all reach the same visual quality.
3. **Pick and download** — Compare the real sizes at equal quality, adjust the settings if you want, then convert. One click re-converts to another format without re-uploading.

## Use cases

- Shrinking photos to meet an upload limit on a form, marketplace or job portal
- Web developers preparing assets in modern formats for faster page loads
- Social media managers producing correctly sized images per platform
- Anyone who wants EXIF and GPS data stripped before sharing a photo

## Tips

- Re-encoding drops the original EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates — useful for privacy, but keep an original if you need that data.
- Never upscale a raster image to hit a size requirement; it invents detail and produces a larger file that looks worse.
- When a form specifies both pixel dimensions and a KB limit, set the dimensions first, then lower quality until the size fits.

## Common problems

- **Transparency turned black after converting to JPG** — JPEG cannot store an alpha channel. Pick a background colour before converting, or export to PNG or WebP instead.
- **The output is larger than the original** — You converted an already-compressed file to a lossless format such as PNG. Choose WebP or AVIF, or keep the original format and lower the quality.
- **The result looks soft or blocky** — Quality is set too low for the amount of detail. Raise it in steps of five and compare — most photos hold up until roughly 70.

## FAQ

### Is the image converter free?

Yes — unlimited conversions, no signup, no watermark. Everything runs in your browser, which is why it costs nothing to offer.

### Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is decoded, converted and downloaded entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly codecs. It never touches a server, so even confidential images are safe here.

### What does "measured at equal quality" mean?

Most converters compare formats at the same quality number — JPEG 80 against WebP 80 against AVIF 80. That comparison is meaningless, because the number means something different in every codec. This tool encodes each format repeatedly and measures the result with SSIM until they all reach the same actual visual quality. Only then are the file sizes worth comparing.

### What is SSIM?

Structural Similarity — a standard measure of how close two images look, from 0 to 1. Unlike a raw pixel difference it tracks structure, so it barely moves for a slight brightness shift and drops sharply when edges and texture are damaged, which is exactly what compression does. Above 0.99 is visually identical; above 0.97 is indistinguishable in normal viewing.

### Which format should I use?

The tool recommends one and explains why. As a rule: AVIF for the smallest files on a modern website, WebP for the web when you also need older browser support, JPEG when maximum compatibility matters, and PNG for logos, screenshots or anything needing transparency or exact pixels.

### What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

JPEG cannot store transparency. Rather than silently filling it with black, the tool asks you to choose a background colour and shows what it will do before you convert.

### Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Drop in a batch and the formats are measured once, on the first image, then applied to the rest. Download them individually or all together as a ZIP.

### Can I resize while converting?

Yes, with one-click size presets. It never upscales — enlarging a raster image invents detail it does not have and makes the file bigger, so a too-large request is clamped and the tool says so.

### Does it remove EXIF and GPS data?

Yes, inherently. Re-encoding from raw pixels drops the original metadata, including GPS coordinates, so nothing travels with the image you share.

### What is the maximum image size?

There is no server limit because there is no server. The practical ceiling is your device memory — large photos work fine on a modern phone or laptop, and very large images simply take longer to measure.
