## What is Speech to Text?

Speech to Text is a free online audio tool from Farvixo that lets you fast, accurate speech transcription — live microphone dictation, audio/video file import, 30+ languages, speaker labels, timestamps & SRT/VTT export. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser through WebAssembly, so recordings, interviews and voice notes never reach a server. Free and unlimited, with no watermark or audible tag added to the output.

## How to use Speech to Text

1. **Add speech or media** — Start live recording from your microphone or drop an audio/video recording (MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, MP4, WebM).
2. **Configure language & style** — Select your language (English, Bengali, Hindi, etc.) and configure speaker labels, timestamps, and verbatim or clean mode.
3. **Transcribe, edit and export** — Review the synchronized transcript, edit any segment inline, rename speakers, and export to TXT, SRT, VTT, CSV, or JSON.

## Use cases

- Fitting a podcast episode or voice note under a messaging or email size limit
- Converting a recording to the format a player, DAW or upload form requires
- Journalists and researchers handling interview audio that must stay private
- Preparing audio for a video edit at a consistent bitrate and sample rate

## Tips

- Speech is fine in mono — downmixing halves the file size with no perceptible loss on voice content.
- For spoken word, 64–96 kbps is transparent; music generally needs 128 kbps or more.
- Every lossy re-encode loses information. Always start from the highest-quality original you have, not from a file you already compressed.

## Common problems

- **The file will not load** — The container is fine but the codec is unusual, or the file is partially downloaded. Re-download the original and try again.
- **The output sounds thin or watery** — The bitrate is too low for the material. Raise it a step, and keep stereo if the source is music rather than speech.
- **Volume is inconsistent across the file** — Enable loudness normalisation, which levels the track to a single EBU R128 target instead of leaving the peaks and quiet passages as they were.

## FAQ

### Is my audio uploaded to a server?

In Local Mode, live microphone transcription runs entirely in your browser using local speech recognition without uploading audio anywhere. Your recordings stay strictly on your device.

### Can I transcribe pre-recorded audio and video files?

Yes. You can import MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, MP4, and WebM files. The tool displays a synchronized waveform player with clickable timestamps for easy review.

### Which languages are supported?

Over 30 languages are supported, including English, Bengali (বাংলা), Hindi (हिन्दी), Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu.

### Can I generate SRT or VTT subtitles for videos?

Yes. The export engine produces standard SubRip (.srt) and WebVTT (.vtt) caption files with precise sequential timestamps ready to import into YouTube, Premiere Pro, or media players.

### Can I edit the transcript and rename speakers?

Yes. The transcript editor allows direct inline editing, global speaker renaming (e.g. rename Speaker 1 to an actual name across the entire transcript), search and replace, and undo/redo.
